This morning I watched an elaborately done video that showed a genuinely proud young husband presenting his wife with his idea of the ultimate gift for her, a dual bag vacuum cleaner. She then marches him out to a doghouse that sucks him up and sends him to a doghouse dungeon full of other men guilty of presenting their wives with thoughtless gifts or uttering something unforgiveable like “your mother looks hot in a swimsuit”.

The video is hilarious and does a good job of promoting a jewelry store, of course. It also got me thinking about the notion of putting your man in the ‘doghouse’. My guy wanted to know what was so offensive about the gifts that included a Thigh Master and a gym membership (our gym membership is something we both really appreciate) and I explained that women’s dissatisfaction with gifts generally has something to with how the gift reflects the way our man sees us. In other words, an apron, vacuum cleaner, and blender mean you see me as the cook and house cleaner, neither of which excites me terribly.

My wonderful man who does most of the cooking and more than his fair share of the cleaning asked me what it said about how I see him when I give him tools, shavers, and car wash kits? Well……..I’m glad there’s no doghouse for women!
